There are huge schools of different species of fish, rays, sharks (hammerheads, silkys, white tips), as well as different species of whales, dolphins, and even whale sharks. The islands are uninhabited by humans and have an area around them (approximately 2000 square kms) which is completely off limits to fishing. This allows much of the marine life within the protected area to flourish in comparison to other areas. The area was deemed a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1997 and is one of Costa Rica’s protected National Parks.
