Brumel Island is located on the corner of the coastline heading from Flamingo towards the north and forms a more or less L shape giving a couple of different spots that are accessible for diving.
Anchor, slightly more exposed to wind, is a great shallow site running along the northern wall of the island. A flat sandy bottom at 40ft with a rock shelf rising out and boulders and rocks providing plenty of places for marine creatures to hide. It’s a great place for some shallow easy exploring and critter spotting. A great place for beginner divers to find their gills.
Brumel’s western facing wall is also a great dive site that can be used for all levels. Dropping in near to the middle of the main rock face you can follow shallow shingle covered slope along. Reaching a sandy channel you can continue following to the south and come upon pinnacles surrounded by sandy bottoms, up to 65ft, where you might get to see white tip sharks chilling on the bottom. Eagle rays have been seen gliding past and schools of grunts are quite common.
Time of year and weather conditions can find the water temperatures to range between 65-80 degrees F (18-27C).
Other marine life that is commonly seen includes moray eels, octopus, puffer species, angel and butterfly fish, sea stars and maybe some round rays or eagle rays. Coastal sites are also good places to look for seahorses and nudibranchs!
